Meet Dr. Saikat Sarkar Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon

Doctor Saikat Sarkar was born in the year 1980 in Kolkata in a medico family.He completed his schooling from Hare School and had a brilliant academic record.He was the school topper in HS (1999 )and he entered Medical College,Kolkata in the year 1999 securing 21st rank in WB JEE(Medical).

He passed MBBS in the year 2004 and completed 1year of rotating internship in 2005.He got Honors marks in Ophthalmology and Pharmacology.During his MBBS he was awarded Gold medals in Ophthalmology,ENT and Paediatric medicine.He was also Class assistant in Pharmacology and Forensic and state medicine.He was awarded Mohua Silver medal for securing highest marks in pharmacology in the university examination(CU).

Dr. Sarkar completed his MS in orthopaedics surgery from N.R.S Medical College 2008-11.He was awarded gold medal in MS(orthopaedics) by WBOA.

In 2011 he passed MRCS from prestigious Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow,UK.

He also cleared DNB in orthopaedics.

In the early part of his career he joined Govt service and worked as a faculty in Bankura Sammilani Medical College and later worked as a consultant in the department of spine surgery in Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals,Kolkata.

He is working as senior consultant orho spine surgeon in Manipal Hospitals,Kolkata .He is also attached with Kims Hospital,Burdwan as HOD and DNB (orthopaedics) teacher.

Fellowships

He completed prestigious AO spine Fellowship(2013) from Sir GangaRam Hospital,New Delhi under the guidance of Dr.Shankar Acharya.

In 2014 he participated in Dartmouth Hitchcock Spine Fellowship,USA as WBOA Fellow under the mentorship of Professor Dr.Dilip Sengupta.

In the year 2017 Dr. Saikat spent 1 month in Schön Klinik Germany with professor C.Wimmer and got training in complex spinal deformity surgery being selected as international AO spine fellow.

He was selected for prestigious IOAWOC fellowship in the subspeciality spine by Indian Orthopaedic Association in 2018. As IOAWOC fellow he was trained in Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, Basantkunj,New Delhi (2019)

He was trained in minimally invasive spine surgery from Military Hospital, Chongqing, China.

Paper presentation / Publication / Conference lecture

Dr.Sarkar regularly presents scientific papers in state/National and International academic conferences.

He was awarded several times for best paper presentation in spine in state conference.

Dr. Saikat has delivered several lectures as state and National faculty in different programmes to train young spine surgeons.

He has several publications in state/National and International scientific journal

He is the author of the topic "Lumbar disc herniation" in internationally famous orthopaedics textbook-Turek's orthopaedics :Principles and Their Applications,7th edition, published by Wolter Kluwer.

He has contributed the chapter on Anterior Cervical Spinal Implants on Orthopaedic implantology book published by Springer.

Surgical interest

Dr.Saikat is known for his interest in spinal surgeries specially cervical and lumbar spine surgeries including microscopic/minimally invasive spine surgeries. In last 10 years he has operated more than 3000 spine cases successfully. Patients come from all parts of West Bengal, adjacecnt states and from Bangladesh for a solution of spine problems.

Apart from spine he performs operations for fractures specially fractures around hip in elderly and Knee replacement surgery.
